PILOT INDUCED OSCILLATIONS AND FLIGHT PHASES IDENTIFICATION OF THE SPACE SHUTTLE AND TRANSPORT AIRPLANES

S. Kolb, CREA, France

Rate limiting is a major source of pilot induced oscillations. The analysis of such occurrences (so called category II PIO) will exploit the describing function method mainly. This last one permits also to examine configurations with other types of nonlinearities where flying qualities cliffs may also happen. Another topic is the identification of flight phases which covers two aspects that are the determination of unknown values for a certain model via optimization algorithms and the classification of flight phases with neural networks. The applications of this study concern the space shuttle and transport airplanes.
