Hypersonic flows of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and argon near toroidal ballutes are investigated with the Direct Simulation Monte-Carlo technique at Knudsen numbers from 0.001 to 1. Strong influences of geometrical factors and the Knudsen number on flow patterns, skin friction, pressure distribution, heat flux, and drag are found.
