THE CONVERSATION ANALYSIS OF AVIATION ENGLISH FROM SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTICS PERSPECTIV

W. Zhao, Civil Aviation University of China, China

Aviation English(AE) is a distinct register of English used by pilots and Air traffic controllers. As it is one of the contributing factor to aviation safety, ICAO and member state aviation authorities require the airspace users to have the proficiency in using AE. The training and testing has been gained more attention, but little work has been done to describe it. The study aims at describing AE from semantic-functional perspectives and get insight into the feature as compared to standard Conversation English (CE). In this study, two corpora of air traffic control speech and standard conversational speech will be examined to demonstrate that AE has significant difference with CE in semantic-functional aspects. The findings of this study reveal how distinct the AE with CE and construct a speech function network of AE. We conclude by offering pedagogical implicationg for enhanced aviation training addressing semantics and interaction competence
