The elastic effects of a transport airplane (KC135) fitted winglet are considered in a fluid structure interaction (FSI) computer simulation for comparison with available experimental data, aiming at the corroboration of the of FSI technique applied to aircraft design with winglets. The effects of the winglet on the aerodynamics and elastic behavior are deeply exploited in the simulations. The aircraft wing structure model was recovered from a typical preliminary sizing procedure based on estimated main aerodynamic loading and given detailed structural layout. The simulations results show excellent agreement when compared to those of a wind tunnel with a wing scaled rigid model and to test flight data of the aircraft.
