We compare three approaches to multi-disciplinary optimization (MDO) of a long-range transport aircraft making use of disciplinary tools from low to high fidelity, necessitating the use of high-performance computing. Both gradient-free and gradient-based MDO architectures are pursued. The XRF1, an Airbus provided research configuration representing a typical long-range wide-body aircraft, is used.
