PASSIVE FLEXIBLE WINGTIP AREA FOR IMPROVING AIRLINERS CRUISE EFFICIENCY AND GUST ALLEVIATION

D. Gueraiche¹, S. Popov¹, A. Guelailia, Space mechanical research development, Algeria; ¹Moscow Aviation Institute, Russia

A concept of a passive aeroelastically tailored wingtip section is analyzed analytically and computationally through a two-way fluid-structure interaction experiment. This aeroelastic wingtip device is used to both enhance aerodynamic performance at cruise, acting as a curved winglet, and to alleviate gust loads by adjusting its curvature proportionally to the aerodynamic loading conditions.
