THE VIBRATION CORRELATION TECHNIQUE – A RELIABLE NONDESTRUCTIVE TOOL TO PREDICT BUCKLING LOADS

H. Abramovich, Technion, I.I.T.,, Israel

The vibration Correlation Technique, the VCT, is an experimental method, based on the measurement of the natural frequencies of thin walled-structures, as a function of the compression applied load, yielding the predicted buckling load , well before the actual buckling will happen. This is one the most reliable methods to nondestructively predict the in-situ buckling loads of thin-walled structures, like columns, curved and planar plates and cylindrical shells. The manuscript presents the actual state-of-the art for the VCT, highlighting typical experimental results achieved with shells, plates and columns.
