ON WINGS WITH NON-ELLIPTIC LIFT DISTRIBUTIONS

E. Bragado-Aldana¹, M.M. Lone¹, A. Riaz¹; ¹Cranfield University, United Kingdom

Majority of the conceptual wing design methods begin with constraining span and in doing so almost commit to an induced drag penalty. Here, the authors present a review of methods, such as Prandtl’s 1933 approach, that consider span to be a free design parameter and yield superior solutions. The review covers the work done in the early 20th century all the way to recent complex MDO processes.
