A BENCHMARK METHOD FOR PREDICTING OBLIQUE SHOCK STRUCTURE

A. Shi, NORTHWESTERN POLYTECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, China; E. Dowell, DUKE UNIVERSITY, United States

Shock wave is an essential feature to transonic, supersonic and hypersonic flows. A new oblique shock relationship that will give a theoretic tool to achieve the minimum shock strength has been developed. Based on symmetries of the new theory, a benchmark method for evaluating the numerical accuracy of Computational Fluid Dynamics codes that are widely used to capture shock structure is proposed. Initial comparisons with available computational and experimental data are encouraging.
