A set of fuel planning strategies is developed for civil formation flight. These strategies consider the influence of atmospheric effects like wind and imponderable events like an early formation breakup, which might increase fuel consumption for the follower aircraft. A trade-off between possible safety risks and the utilization of formation benefits is discussed for the different strategies.
