LAMINAR-TURBULENT TRANSITION MECHANISMS OVER WIDELY-SPACED SUCTION HOLES

B. Crowleyı, C. Atkinı; ıCity University of London, United Kingdom

Boundary layer suction is used to delay transition to turbulence. In practice, suction through discrete holes has been shown to reduce the effectiveness compared to theory and even, in some cases, cause premature transition. Suction experiments in a low-turbulence environment are here shown to introduce a low-frequency disturbance which grows spatially and in proportion to suction strength.
