Accurate assessment of pilot workload is a key element of flight test, and one which has become significantly more important in the era of digital cockpits and increasing system automation. This paper outlines a number of shortfalls in existing methods and proposes a new workload rating scale, including the findings of a flight- test- based validation exercise.
