DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF AIRFOIL FOR WIND TURBINE WITH RESPECT TO ICE ACCRETION

T. Yoon, South Korea; K. Yee, South Korea

In this paper, it is suggested methodology to solve both problems. Design parameters were revealed by analyzing size of the trailing edge noise and aerodynamics performance variation due to ice accretion. Using the S817 Airfoil, an airfoil for the tip of wind turbines, as the baseline to find the optimal shape through a multi-objective optimizer. The result shows considerable improvements that both in the iced performance of the airfoil and in the loudness of noise can be achieved while maintaining good clean airfoil characteristics.
