NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF ICE ACCRETION INFLUENCED BY AN ANTI-ICING HEATING SYSTEM

K. Szilder, Aerospace, National Research Council, Canada; E. Lozowski, University of Alberta, Canada

An ability to numerically model the buildup of runback ice resulting from anti-icing heating is essential to the prediction and mitigation of its associated aerodynamic penalties. We have developed a unique icing modelling capability, called the “morphogenetic” approach, based on a discrete formulation and simulation of ice formation physics that is very well suited for this ice shape prediction task.
