Reducing the friction drag lowers the fuel consumption needed for transportation means such as trains and aircrafts. The laminar state has a smaller friction drag than the turbulent one. Thus, we want to avoid or delay the laminar-to-turbulent transition, and do it by means of actuators that work on the boundary-layer flow instabilities and are controlled by an adaptive control-law.
