ACOUSTIC MODES AND GLOBAL INSTABILITIES IN WAKES AND JETS

E. Martini, ITA, Brazil; A. Cavalieri, ITA, Brazil; P. Jordan, Universite de Poitiers, France

Wake instability is studied with focus on the role of upstream (??) modes. Analytical modeling, locally parallel approximations and global modes are used to study the problem. A exact analogy with duct pressure waves is found for thin shear layers. Global modes are broke down into locally parallel modes, allowing a better physical understanding of the physics behind the instability.
