EFFECTS OF THE INTRINSIC THREE-DIMENSIONALIZATION OF LAMINAR SEPARATION BUBBLES ON THE AMPLIFICATION OF EXTERNAL DISTURBANCES

D. Rodriguez, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brazil; E.M. Gennaro, Sao Paulo State University, Brazil

Laminar separation bubbles (LSB) are unstable with respect to a three-dimensional instability of centrifugal nature. Spanwise inhomogeneities have been reported in experiments in which the amplification of instability waves dominates the physics. The co-existence of the two mechanisms is investigated by means of 3D PSE and DNS. The spanwise waviness of the LSB modifies the amplification of incoming disturbance waves, and results into a staggered arrangement of the vortices shed from bubble.
