SYSTEM-LEVEL ASSESSMENT OF TAIL-MOUNTED PROPELLERS FOR REGIONAL AIRCRAFT

R. Vosı, M.F.M. Hoogreefı; ıDelft University of Technology, Netherlands

The conceptual design, analysis and system-level assessment of tail-mounted propulsion is detailed and compared to a baseline aircraft design featuring wing-mounted propellers. Two new concepts are evaluated: tip-mounted propellers on a horizontal tail plane and ducted propellors. Results show a higher take-off weight (+5%) and fuel burn (+3%), which is attributed to the large center-of-gravity excursion which results from the engine installation.
