This paper addresses a systematic approach in aircraft configuration design optimization. It first discusses the optimization objectives and criteria and then aircraft configuration classifications. The relationship between each major component and design requirements are evaluated. Then the systems engineering principals are presented. At the end, systems engineering approach is applied in optimization of aircraft configuration and a new configuration design optimization technique is introduced.
