Previous work has shown that under certain circumstances, impact on highly loaded composite scarf joints may cause catastrophic failure. Results are presented from experimental and finite element failure analyses of tension loaded scarf joints in CFRP specimens with quasi-static lateral loads which simulate impact on tension loaded scarf joined specimens.
