New methods of composite manufacturing and design were deemed necessary by the Toyota Aviation Business Development Office in order to fully take advantage of the benefits of composite structures such as laminar flow aerodynamics, yet still achieve a cost-competitive product. This paper describes the technology developments created by Toyota and vendors during the design, fabrication, and testing of the Toyota Advanced Aircraft Proof of Concept (TAA POC) vehicle.
