Application of a scalar strain-based damage onset theory to the failure of a carbon fibre specimen loaded in tension is described in this paper. A multi-scale modelling process has been utilized to model the cross-ply laminate. Micromechanical sub-models are derived from a laminate shell or layered solid finite element model. These models enable direct de-homogenization of the strain fields. Strain invariants can then used to predict the onset of damage within both fibre and matrix phases.
