This paper describes the impact of aviation on the environment and the challenge of designing environmentally friendly operational procedures that meet the requirements of safety, capacity and efficiency. A simulation and optimization method is presented to guide decision-making in the presence of uncertainties in the atmospheric and aerodynamic models.
