OPERATIONAL IMPLICATIONS OF CRUISE SPEED REDUCTIONS FOR NEXT GENERATION FUEL EFFICIENT SUBSONIC AIRCRAFT

P. A. Bonnefoy, R. J. Hansman
MIT, USA

Keywords: next generation aircraft designs, cruise speed, fuel efficiency, airlines’ operations

Significant reductions of fuel burn and emissions could be achieved by opening up the aircraft design space to consider slightly lower cruise speeds. This paper investigates the potential impacts of cruise speed reductions on various airline schedules and the costs and benefits from an airline economics and competitiveness perspective.
