A problem functional decomposition is used, yielding a hierarchical network of product design problems. Using process commonality, every problem is based on a single basic element, called the “Engineering Primitive, to be used in conceptual trade-off studies of a vertical tailplane, based on the structures, aerodynamics, and manufacturing disciplines.
