Keywords: Friction Stir Welding, Damage Tolerance

This paper describes how the fatigue initiation properties obtained for a friction stir welded joint in aluminium AA2024-T3, must be translated into design criteria for an aircraft fuselage structure. This includes minimum distances to rivet holes, stiffeners, frames and how to deal with the weld crossing a but-strap-joint or doubler.
