This paper is a review of development of theory and practice in the field of air-breathing engine (ABE) creation in Russia. It is natural to break it into three periods: past, present, and future. The development of theoretical concepts of the past is presented accompanied by a comprehensive retrospective review devoted to creation of aviation ABEs in Russia, especially in the favorable period covered the 1950s – 1990s of the last century. The characteristic features of the present period in the theory development are demonstrated with typical examples of different engine components. In the description of the future period in the theory development, some possible directions of more distant future are covered along with quite specific and doubtless directions of the next few years.
