Keywords: jet noise, acoustics, nozzle

With the expected increased stringency of noise regulations jet noise becomes a restricting factor in aircraft operations. An internal research and development program was started to investigate how to reduce jet noise while achieving acceptable impacts on the engine and aircraft. The chevron nozzle for separate flow exhaust systems was the outcome, reducing jet noise by enhancing mixing of the fan, core and ambient streams faster than conventional nozzles, with a minimal impact on performance. This paper provides a brief overview of this technology.
