Overview on past and on-going activities in aircraft design, where the objective is an adaptive change of the elastic shape of the airplane by active deformations of the structure. The paper concentrates on European activities and gives a detailed overview on experiences in Russia, as well as on a current European research project. One very new concept, based on an adaptive stiffness attachment for all-movable aerodynamic surfaces, will be discussed. Some results from preliminary analytical and experimental studies in the UK and in Germany are given.
