A viscous-inviscid splitting finite element method is developed to solve two-dimensional compressible and incompressible external flows. The outer inviscid solution is dealt with by solving the potential flow using an artificial compressibility finite element method while the inner viscous solution is obtained by solving the Navier-Stokes equations by a streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin finite element method.
