DOES THE AIR TRANSPORT MARKET NEED "UNCONVENTIONAL AIRCRAFT CONFIGURATIONS"?

D. Schmitt, A. Strohmayer
Technical University of München, Germany

Keywords: air transport, market requirements, aircraft design, unconventional configurations, scenario process, robust strategy, new technologies

On the one hand, technological progress in aeronautics seems to have decelerated. On the other hand, new technological concepts (e.g. BWB, TSA) are emerging. In order to establish whether the market would need and accept these new vehicles, a dedicated scenario process has been initiated, projecting the air transport market of the year 2030. In the paper, the scenario process is documented, a methodology to define a robust technology strategy is presented, and three typical, possible scenarios are highlighted to demonstrate and validate the proposed method.
