A wide range of studies has been carried out so
far in the domain of delegation of separation
assurance to aircraft, leading to various
concepts, applications and techniques. The
present article is an attempt to provide a
framework for analysing these studies from an
operational perspective to a more theoretical
point of view. The framework is based upon a
new dimension – the notion of “level of
delegation”. The article addresses the
operational aspects, the cockpit aspects through
the notion of “level of assistance” and the
system point of view through intent, resolution
and co-ordination characterisation.
